Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need prior pottery experience to join?
A: Not at all! We welcome everyone from complete beginners to experienced ceramicists. Whether it’s your first time touching clay or you’ve been throwing for years, you’ll find a place here.
Q: Do I need to be a member to take a class?
A: Nope! Membership is for those who want unlimited studio access and extra perks, but anyone can sign up for our 8-week classes, workshops, and events without a membership.
Q: What’s the difference between wheel-throwing and hand-building?
A: Wheel-throwing uses a pottery wheel to shape clay into symmetrical pieces like bowls, mugs, and vases. Hand-building uses techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab construction, which is perfect for more organic, sculptural forms.
Q: How long are your classes?
A: Most of our workshops are 2 hours, perfect for a fun evening or afternoon. 8-Week classes run for 2 hours each week so you can dive in and develop your skills.
Q: What ages can participate?
A: We typically recommend folks ages 13+ participate in our classes, though we do offer private lessons for kiddos aged 6-12! Our insurance requires that anyone under 18 should have a parent/guardian present in the building during class time. If you’re unsure whether your child should participate in an activity, please just ask! Send us an email at hello@blackolivepottery.com and we can chat through it together.
Q: Can I book the studio for a private event?
A: Absolutely! We host birthday parties, bachelorette gatherings, team-building events, and more. Just let us know your group size and we’ll help you plan a memorable clay day. Send us an email at hello@blackolivepottery.com to start the conversation.
Q: How long does it take to get my pottery back?
A: The ceramic process does take some time and will test your patience (it certainly tests ours!). The drying, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing process takes about 3–4 weeks depending on humidity, kiln schedule, and studio workload. We’ll let you know when your pieces are ready for pickup via email.
Q: How do I become a member?
A: You can apply online here and a member of our team will review your application to confirm your previous ceramics experience. We’ll schedule a quick orientation to make sure you’re comfortable with our equipment and policies before you start.
Q: What does it mean to be a member?
A: One of us! One of us! It means you’re as obsessed with pottery as we are! Becoming a member means you’ve demonstrated a basic understanding of ceramics and you’re interested in working on projects on your own, outside of a structured class environment. With one monthly membership fee, you’ll have unlimited opportunities to pop into the studio and create. (Kind of like a gym membership, except you’ll actually be excited to use our membership!!!) You’ll have access to the studio from 10 am - 10 pm every single day, a dedicated shelf to store your pieces and tools, and a variety of perks based on the membership tier you select. Find out more about those perks, here!
Q: Will pottery make me as cool as Demi Moore in Ghost?
A: We can’t promise Patrick Swayze will show up, but you’ll definitely get the slow-motion clay shots for your personal highlight reel.
